Ramona Nagabczyńska’s solo takes on the subject of the “natural” body, via the concept of ur matter coined by Polish theatre icon Tadeusz Kantor. Ur-matter is the state, which precedes illusion, the autonomous pre-existence of theatrical matter. In pURe, the choreographer uses the concept of ur-matter in relationship to her body.
The body, which is often seen as a playing field for culture, automatically poses questions about discipline. In this respect, it aligns itself with Tadeusz Kantor’s mannequin- the seemingly inanimate figure, which recurrently appears in his plays. However, instead of looking at the body as object of oppression, the choreographer shifts her focus to the body’s agency, will and ability to emancipate itself and impose its own order. By changing the question from ‘what is expected of the body’ to ‘what does the body want’, the body is transported from the field of the symbolic to the field of needs, desires and fantasies. The energy of ur-matter multiplies: it bleeds into the space and into each corner of the organism, revealing a state, which transgresses both the functional and the symbolic. In this compulsive process, the body strives to find a more independent form of existence. Corporeality becomes a form of activity, which organizes the environment, and not just a potential power on standby. pURe was created in the frame of Maat Festival’s Kantor Now! – a platform for creating choreographic work, which relates to the legacy of Tadeusz Kantor. The project was supported by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.   ramonanagabczynska.com
